About Us

MLK Ed Center, Lane County Youth ServicesThe MLK Ed Center serves secondary students who currently have an active case with Lane County Youth Services. The program is a collaboration between Lane County YS and Lane ESD. MLK offers wrap-around services and support to youth who have experienced multiple interruptions in traditional school placements. Our mission is to provide our students with opportunities to develop skills needed to be successful in school, work and our community.

We partner with local businesses and agencies to provide presentations, tours, job shadowing, and other employment opportunities. We also utilize several interns and tutors from local area colleges and universities.

We are proud to note that the overall reading and math scores of students enrolled in the M.L.K. Ed. Center have increased by two grade levels and recidivism/re-offense has shown a 74% reduction.

The primary focus of classroom instruction is to improve student academic performance. Students work on developing skills while pursuing either High School credit or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Classes are in session from 9:00 to 3:00 Monday through Friday.

Students participate in a well rounded schedule and courses including:

  •  Social Studies
  •  Language Arts
  •  Math
  •  Science
  •  PE/Health
  •  Electives

Curriculum is adopted to align with State standards and graduation requirements. Students who are eligible for the GED program are given placement testing and have access to the University of Oregon Testing Center.

The MLK Ed Center focuses on job skills education and offers on-site vocational programs to all youth. These programs offer students hands-on learning about careers and vocational paths. The vocational programs we offer consist of:

  • Culinary Arts
  • Horticulture
  • Outside Community Placements

In addition, students learn job-readiness skills such as resume preparation, interviewing techniques and career exploration.

At the Martin Luther King Education Center, we pride ourselves on offering services tailored to the youth referred to our program, through a campus wide system of Positive Behavior Support. We provide opportunities for students to develop skills for success in school, at work, and in the community.
